藿香正气水里面的藿香能发散风寒，最善于治疗风寒感冒，内伤生冷湿滞所导致的恶寒、发热、头痛、脘闷、呕吐等症。而且藿香也具有芳香化湿的作用，治疗暑湿、湿温等症。

藿香正气水中还含有紫苏、生姜、陈皮，这些药均能使消化液分泌增加，抑制肠内异常发酵，促进积气排出，所以可以加强主药藿香的理气和中以及健胃的功效。

藿香正气水除了直接喝以外，还可以用来敷肚脐。 藿香正气水解暑力较强，是解暑良药。但由于气味较怪，孩子常不愿意喝。 这时可用外敷法：用棉球吸足藿香正气水，放在孩子肚脐上，用创可贴或胶布贴住。可在孩子长时间户外活动前贴上，或是气温高的几天每天贴2~3小时。但如果气温持续在35℃以上，建议不要让孩子在户外活动。 需要注意的是，对酒精过敏、皮肤有伤口的孩子不宜用此方法。夏季，蚊虫繁殖速度快，若不慎被蚊虫叮咬，也可使用藿香正气水外涂叮咬处，可以减轻或消除瘙痒感。

藿香正气水它同样有服用禁忌。通常过敏体质者是禁用内服的。藿香正气水的成分比较复杂，里面含有多种中药材，是一种复杂的药效成分，那么过敏体质的人服用引起症状的几率增加。同时具有高血压、心脏病、肝病、糖尿病、以及肾病等慢性病严重者应该在医生的指导下服用。

因为藿香正气水里面含有酒精，也就是我们通常说的乙醇，它的含量是40%～50%，因此服用藿香正气水以后是不宜驾驶的。同时切记要知道服了藿香正气水以后，不能与头孢类的抗菌药物同时服用，因为藿香正气水里面含有的酒精与头孢类的药物发生双硫仑样的反应，可以使病人致死。
