5月22日13时07分，中国工程院院士、“共和国勋章”获得者袁隆平，这位培育出世界上第一个高产杂交水稻，救苍生于饥饿的中国科学家在长沙逝世，享年91岁。这位一生浸在稻田里，把功勋写在大地上的“杂交水稻之父”曾一次次创造了水稻亩产量的奇迹，让中国人“端牢饭碗”。

Chinese scientist Yuan Longping, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and winner of the “Medal of Republic”, renowned for developing the first hybrid rice strains that have pulled countless people out of hunger, passed away in Changsha at 13:07 p.m. on May 22nd at the age of 91. The “father of hybrid rice”, who immersed himself in rice fields and wrote his exploits on the earth, has created the miracle of rice yield again and again, making the Chinese people “hold the bowl steadily”.

袁隆平生于1930年9月，他帮助中国创造了一个伟大的奇迹——用占不到世界土地总面积9％的土地，养活了世界近五分之一的人口。

Yuan Longping, born in September 1930, helped China work a great wonder — feeding nearly one-fifth of the world's population with less than 9 percent of the world's total land.

他在1973年培育出世界上第一个高产杂交水稻，之后全国乃至世界其他国家大面积推广应用，使水稻的单产和总产得以大幅度提高。

He cultivated the world's first high-yielding hybrid rice strain in 1973, which was later grown on a large scale in China and other countries to substantially raise the output.

“禾下乘凉梦”和“杂交水稻覆盖全球梦”是袁隆平一生的梦想。

“Dream of resting under the ears of rice and the hybrid rice covering the whole world” is his lifelong dream.

20多年来，他带领团队开展超级杂交稻攻关，分别于2000年、2004年、2011年、2014年实现了大面积示范每公顷10.5吨、12吨、13.5吨、15吨的目标。

For more than 20 years, he had led his team in tackling key problems of super hybrid rice. The targets of 10.5 tons, 12 tons, 13.5 tons and 15 tons per hectare for large-scale demonstration were achieved in 2000, 2004, 2011 and 2014.

最新育成的第三代杂交稻叁优一号，2020年作双季晚稻种植平均亩产达911.7公斤，加上第二代杂交早稻亩产619.06公斤，全年亩产达1530.76公斤，实现了周年亩产稻谷3000斤的攻关目标。

Sanyu No.1, a newly bred third-generation hybrid rice, will yield 911.7 kilograms per mu for double-dropping late rice in 2020. Combined with the second generation of hybrid early rice yield of 619.06 kg per mu, the annual yield per mu reached 1530.76 kg, achieving the annual yield of rice 3000 kg.

“禾下乘凉梦”随着不断高产的超级稻逐渐成为现实。

His first dream has become a reality with the continuous high yield of supper rice.

“杂交水稻覆盖全球梦”则是希望超级稻走出国门，为世界粮食安全作出贡献。

“Hybrid rice covering the whole world” is the hope that super rice will contribute to the world food security.

自20世纪80年代以来，袁隆平的团队已为非洲、美洲和亚洲的数十个国家提供了培训课程——为面临饥荒风险的地区提供了坚实的食物来源。

Since the 1980s, Yuan's team has offered training courses in dozens of countries in Africa, the Americas and Asia — providing a robust food source in areas with a high risk of famine.

2020年9月19日是全国科普日，袁隆平曾为青少年送上了寄语。他分享了8字成功经验：知识（knowledge）、汗水(sweat)、灵感 (inspiration) 和机遇 (chance)。袁隆平说道，“知识是基础，汗水是实践。灵感是思想火花，思想火花人人有，不要放弃它。Chance favors the prepared mind！”袁隆平为了他的梦想，奔忙了一辈子。他是一位真正的耕耘者。当他还是一个乡村教师的时候，已经具有颠覆世界权威的胆识；当他名满天下的时候，却仍然只是专注于田畴，淡泊名利，播撒智慧，收获富足。他毕生的梦想，就是让所有的人远离饥饿。

Yuan Longping was busy with his dream all his life. He is a real cultivator. When he was a village teacher, he had the courage to subvert the authority of the world. When he became famous, he was still only focused on land, indifferent to fame and fortune, spreading wisdom and gaining spiritual harvest.
