Our 2022 salary survey of data center professionals’ compensation, training, and job satisfaction found that data center workers value persity initiatives alongside salary.

In the data center, as in many other industries, 2021 was a year like no other, though it was at least an improvement over 2020. While the world was beginning to recover from COVID-19 and its associated economic disruption, data center operators were still grappling with increased load on their services, the Great Resignation, and staff members needing or wanting to work from home – and employee compensation reflected that.

The good news is that data center workers largely seem satisfied with the salary increases and bonuses they received, and not many appear to be looking to their next job, at least for now. But an aging workforce and a lack of focus on updating skill sets could presage problems in the future.

摘要

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

These are among the findings of the 2021 Informa Engage IT Salary Survey, conducted by Data Center Knowledge. Earlier this year, Informa Engage surveyed 145 data center and other IT professionals worldwide, with questions mainly dealing with their salaries, work and training experiences, and job satisfaction. Their responses told us the following:

1.More than half of workers reported receiving raises in 2021, and nearly half reported receiving bonuses – and they expect that in 2022 as well.

2.Many workers report not having the time, budget, or management support for ongoing training, which could result in a skills gap going forward.

3.The data center workforce is aging, and not being replaced by younger workers, leading to concerns of a “silver tsunami” in the coming years.

Interpreting the Findings: What Are the Main Takeaways?

Here are some of the findings from the Data Center Knowledge IT Salary Survey, which surveyed 145 Data Center Knowledge readers. We talked to Kristin Letourneau, vice president of research for Informa Engage, who was in charge of performing the survey.

The Approaching Silver Tsunami

There’s two things to note about the findings in Figure 1. First, a supermajority of survey respondents, 85%, are male. It’s not that it’s inherently a bad thing, and in fact it’s pretty common in technology, Letourneau said. “I’m never surprised when I see an 85-10 split,” she said.

But the fact that just a handful of women responded makes it difficult to draw valid statistical comparisons based on sex – such as, comparing salaries, bonuses, and job satisfaction between men and women IT workers. “It precludes the ability to slice and dice,” Letourneau said. “If we had 100 women, or even 50, there’d be a reason to explore those things with more confidence.”

In data center technician jobs specifically, Zippia found that 73.1% are men and 26.9% are women – a proportion that hasn’t changed much since 2010 – and that women currently average $0.94 for every $1 earned by men.

The other demographic factor to notice? Look at the age. The mean age is 53. Moreover, 42% of respondents are 55 or over – meaning they are likely to retire in 10 years or less – while only 13% are under 45. Data center operators are facing a “silver tsunami” — and young people aren’t joining data centers.

Raises Abundant in 2021

Results indicated that 2021 was a good year for data center professionals in terms of salary. Some 63% got raises – sometimes as much as 10% or more — while only 8% got salary reductions. In comparison with other industries, that’s high, Letourneau said. Many industries were stagnant in 2021 and adopted a “batten down the hatches” mentality, with flat budgets, to get through the pandemic, she said. So the fact that the majority of respondents saw an increase was interesting, she said. She would have also expected the 29% figure of “no change” to be higher, she added.

Bonuses Also Common

Similarly, almost half of the respondents reported receiving a bonus in 2021, some of them pretty hefty: 22% reported receiving $50,000 or more, and even the median amount was $15,000. “That’s high compared with other industries that we deal with,” Letourneau said.

Staff Members Satisfied With Compensation…for Now

With that level of raise and bonus, it’s not surprising, then, that almost 60% of respondents said they were at least somewhat satisfied with their current total compensation. “We generally see higher levels of satisfaction,” Letourneau said.

No Time or Budget for Training

Interestingly, 76% of respondents said they hadn’t completed or renewed any certificates in the past year. When asked why, reasons ranged from “work demands do not permit time out of office,” followed by “lack of training budget” (as well as similar reasons such as “I’m unable to travel for training,” “our training plan does not include annual training,” and “management does not see a tangible benefit from training”). Do data center operators really consider ongoing training to be that low of a priority, and is that a good idea?

Of the respondents who did have training, it was spread among a smattering of topics, with no one single area that got their attention — “cloud” was the largest at 29%, Letourneau said. She found that surprising. “Is there nowhere that the market needs to aggregate?” she said.

Will They Stay or Will They Go?

All told, Letourneau said it’s not surprising that just 28% of respondents said it was at least likely that they’d be seeking employment outside their current company within the next 12 months – which, remember, is halfway over by now – and that 21% said it was at least likely that they’d be looking for another job within their same company in the next 12 months. She also wondered whether that figure was related to the low incidence of respondents reporting that they’d completed certifications. “If data center professionals were more interested in alternative employment, that would be a driver,” she noted.

The relatively low incidence of job-seeking could also be related to the pandemic, Letourneau said. “We might see a change in a couple of years,” she said, but at that point workers might also need to deal with the challenges of looking for work in the midst of a recession, she warned.

Finally, remember the age demographic from Figure 1: Just because 42% and 54% say they’re at least unlikely to be looking for another job doesn’t mean they’re still going to be around. They may be “quiet quitting ” and coasting toward retirement instead.
