「Jeff的词汇决斗③」Comparative/Comparable

这里是Jeff的词汇决斗时间，由于本人正在准备某语言考试，平时需要积累一些词汇，但是随着背的单词越来越多，我发现最最难以掌握的并不是那些所谓比较”高端“但意思比较单一的词汇，比如什么Photosynthesis这类的词汇，通过词根、词缀就可以轻松记住它们。

相反地，往往是那些平时最常用，有一大堆看似毫不相干的意项的词汇，尤其它们有时还会有很多长得比较像的兄弟姐妹，背起来着实让人抓狂，相信很多有过高强度积累词汇经历的朋友应该有同样的感觉，所以我特意把自己平时容易混淆的一些单词整理出来分享给大家，希望我们可以共同学习，共同进步。

在进入正题之前，需要补充一下的就是我自己平时背单词不怎么喜欢看中文意思，因为中文翻译过一遍之后往往会使单词的原意被滤掉了一部分，致使在分辨一些近义词的时候更加困难，所以我下面整理的单词释义内容是参考Collins这样的英英释义词典的，而其中单词意项和例句的中文翻译是我自己做的，有什么地方出现纰漏还请大家评论区踊跃发言，哈哈~~

Comparable/Comparative

废话不多说，先上释义

Comparable

ADJECTIVE

• Something that is comparable to something else is roughly similar, for example in amount or importance.

【某件事在数量或重要程度上和另一件事相仿】

...paying the same wages to men and women for work of comparable value.

为创造了相似价值的男性和女性支付同样的报酬。

• If two or more things are comparable, they are of the same kind or are in the same situation, and so they can reasonably be compared.

【两件或更多的事物属于同一类或处于相同的境况从而使得我们可以相互比较它们】

In other comparable countries real wages increased much more rapidly.

在其他类似的国家，工资的增长速度要快得多。

Comparative

ADJECTIVE

• You use comparative to show that you are judging something against a previous or different situation. For example, comparative calm is a situation which is calmer than before or calmer than the situation in other places.

【形容一件事相比之前或其他地方的事更加如何如何的】

The task was accomplished with comparative ease.

这项任务完成得更加轻松。

• A comparative study is a study that involves the comparison of two or more things of the same kind.

【形容一项研究的内容是比较同类事物的不同处】

...a comparative study of the dietary practices of people from various regions.

这项研究的内容是不同地区人们的饮食习惯差异。

From these examples, we can see that the main meaning of comparable is "equal" or "similar" and the main meaning of comparative is "compare one thing to another".

it make sense because there is suffix "-able" which stands for "can do something" in comparable. In this example, "comparable" means "two or more things can be compared". So it's not hard to understand why the main meaning of comparable is "similar" or "equal", because only similar or equal things can be compared.

In the case of comparative, it's transformed from compare using the common adjective suffix "-ive", because of the main meaning of compare is to contrast two or more things, so comparative keep that meaning, to describe one thing is more ... than other things.

从上面的例子中我们可以看出，“Comparable”主要表达的意思是”相似的，相仿的“，而“Comparative”主要表达的意思是“一件事比其他事更加如何如何的”。

虽然二者都是“Compare”这个动词演化而来的形容词，但是“Comparable”使用了“-able”后缀，而该后缀的意思是“可做某事”，应用到“Comparable”上就是“可以比较”，而我们再将该意思引申一下便得到了“相似的，相仿的”，因为只有“相似的，相仿的”事物才有可比性。

至于“Comparative”，它使用的是最常见的“-ive”这样的形容词后缀，所以它继承了“Compare”的原意，即”一件事比其他事更加如何如何的“。
