Can I Make Something?

By Ann Wright | Art by Valentina Belloni

Little Chipmunk tugged his grandpa’s sleeve. “Can we make cookies, Poppy?”

“That sounds like fun,” said Poppy.

Together they rolled out dough and cut out star shapes.

After they made stars, there was some leftover dough.

“Can I make something with it?” asked Little Chipmunk.

“That sounds like fun too,” said Poppy.

Little Chipmunk rolled the dough in his paws.

“Look, Poppy, I made a ball!” he said. “Can you make something?”

Poppy pushed the ball flat. “I made a pancake,” he said.

Next, they made two skinny snakes and turned them into circles.

Then Little Chipmunk squished the dough together and put it on the table.

“What did you make?” asked his grandpa.

“A nothing!” laughed Little Chipmunk. “I made a nothing!”

His grandpa laughed too. “But you really did make something,” he said.

“What, Poppy? What did I make?”

“You made a joke,” said his smiling grandpa. “A very funny joke.”
