Learn to get your head up to kick

“The first lesson I learned at Barcelona was to play with your head up. If you look around after you get the ball, then how did you come and decide what to do next? But if you raise your head before your teammate passes to you, you can immediately notice the situation around you. You will know where the nearest opponent is and the most suitable way to make a successful pass. I’ve had accepted many wonderful suggestions in my career, but this one is still the most important.”

Know the most appropriate move for the next step

“When I receive the ball, I had already observed the surroundings, so I would decide if I had the time to take the ball and make a turn, or it would be better not to do that because there are already defenders behind me.Make the next move in advance is the most important thing. If I’m under pressure,I will pass the ball or protect the ball in a direction where they can’t intercept the ball. In general,I will look for options that can win me room to deal with. It allows me to protect the ball safely and allows the whole team to move forward effectively.”

清楚下一步的最合适动作

Plan your passes accurately

“The most important requirement for the passing technology is that your pass can be smoothly received by your teammates and then proceed to the next move. The first thing to do before passing the ball is to observe the surroundings and find the empty positions of your teammates who are not being watched by the defenders. If your teammates are clinging to the defenders and you pass the ball to them, it is simply sending them to the dangerous situation. I will also consider the forward and reverse feet of the receiver, and then pass the ball that is the most comfortable to them in turn. In this way they can also deal with the next move quickly. For passers, we hope that passing will allow teammates to receive the ball smoothly, move forward quickly and take control of the overall situation.

The strength of the pass is the key

“The speed of the ball is often the key to a successful pass. If you instigate the final blow, then you need to kick harder, so that your teammates can continue to use the pass and power hit the goal. That’s especially true for a cross. A five-metre-pass is different – the power will have many changes. It depends on who’s around, and he may want to make a kick or hold the ball. If I’m not familiar with the characteristics of my teammates, I’ll pass the ball with more power, but still use the instep (top of the foot) to ensure accuracy.”

This also means that I have to run a lot to find space, so that my teammates can attack comfortably after receiving my pass. You must constantly observe and think about changes in the situation on the pitch, and at the same time, you must analyse the most suitable to pass.

Learn to love the feeling of assisting

“Nothing better than assisting with a goal scoring opportunity. When you give a beautiful goal assist with a final pass, you will think: ‘Bloody hell, this is fantastic.’Although it feels good after sharing the ball out to the wing and scoring from a long pass, what excites me the most is to let the forward get a one-on-one opportunity with the goalkeeper after a straight kick through the opponent’s defence line in the centre. The assist I gave Pedro in the 2011 Champions League final was very unforgettable for me.”

学着爱上助攻的感觉
