人为排放的CO2大约会有一半留在大气中，另一半则会被陆地和海洋吸收。如果陆地和海洋的“碳汇”效率降低（例如，由于海洋变暖或永久冻土层融化），则较大部分人为排放的CO2将会留在大气中，从而加速气候变化。“碳汇”效率的变化可以通过分析空气成分的趋势间接估算，即大气增长率与人为排放CO2之间的比率。然而，由于土地利用和土地覆被变化（LULCC）产生的排放是最大的不确定性因素。本研究中，作者基于关键毁林区的能见度数据构建了LULCC排放数据集，这些能见度观测结果间接代表了与LULCC相关的火灾排放，并且提供了长期和一致的LULCC排放数据集。研究结果表明，自1959年以来，空气中的CO2含量减少了0.014± 0.010 decade−1，这也侧面反映出了陆地-海洋“碳汇”的增长速度至少与人为排放CO2的速度相当。
