This afternoon the students were requested to give a short，simple public speech,saying what they liked and what they could and using English. To my surprise,few students were courageous enough to stand on the platform and deliver anaddress.

课堂上，要求学生发表一个简短的演讲，喜欢说什么就说什么，能说什么就说什么，用英语。

Most of them sat quietly. They were either too shy or too nervous,worrying about losing face.

多数学生静静地坐着,要么因为害羞，要么害怕丢脸。

The students came to Datong University from different parts of theprovince. The majority of them had never seen each other before. By making apresentation, they could become the focus of attention. Their classmates wouldknow who they were.

从全省各地，学生汇聚大同大学。在此之前，他们中三分之二的孩子未曾谋面。通过登台亮相展示才华，他们能够成为众人注意的焦点，让身边的同学认识他们。

Hoping to be noticed and valued is people’s common wish. If you aretalented and competent without anyone knowing it, your dream won’t come true,for you lack opportunities.

One day, director Zhangyomou selected an actress in a rural juniormiddle school. He asked a group of girl students, “Which of you would like to appearin the movie?”

All of them kept silence.
