Capturing Stories from Foundation Work
Suddenly Disconnected, We Stop Digging Deeper
One evening, a patient just over 40 years old came to the office with his father to receive donated medication. Although he could now get his medicine for free, he still looked worried. Teacher Yuan Li happened to be in the office and asked him why he seemed so sad. He smiled weakly and shared his troubles: his family had taken out a loan to buy a house just a couple of years ago. Now he was sick and couldn't work, leaving his wife as the sole breadwinner. They also had two children to support. Because he couldn't work, they had to call his father from their hometown to come help.
"Why not sell the house? That would ease the financial pressure," we asked. He smiled bitterly and said they bought it when prices were high; selling now would mean losing money... Seeing it was already dark, we asked how they would get home. They planned to go to the train station to see if there were any tickets; if not, they would just make do at the station overnight and leave the next day. Teacher Yuan couldn't bear it and paid for a night's accommodation so they could rest properly before leaving the next day. The father and son were full of gratitude; you could see the son's eyes glistening. We thought we'd see them again in three months for their next medication, but just a few days later, we got a desperate WeChat message from his wife: he had suddenly suffered a collapsed lung and was in the ICU... Stories like this are not uncommon at our foundation. After working here for a while, staff develop an unspoken understanding: if a WeChat connection suddenly goes silent, we stop digging deeper. We're afraid of finding sad news.
The Father Who Owed Money with a "Cheerful Defiance"
Of course, we also see patients with amazingly positive attitudes. Another father and son came to the office for medication. Both had pneumoconiosis (dust lung disease). The son was only 26, and his condition was so severe he was already taking the maximum dosage. On their first visit, the son kept a serious face the whole time, but the father was all smiles, cheerful, and talkative. We learned that for treatment and living expenses, they had racked up hundreds of thousands in debt and had even been sued. I asked the father, "What will you do?" He laughed and said, "Well, if they sue, they sue! Can't pay means can't pay!" I chuckled and said, "You're quite 'cheerfully defiant' about it!" He replied, "What else can I do? Life has to go on..." Later, they came regularly every three months for their medicine. As we got to know them, the father always greeted us with a happy smile. His son also started smiling and would chat with us.
Help Me, Help Me Again, and Again
We've also encountered patients who kept asking for more. They wanted one oxygen concentrator, then two. Then they felt a 5L model wasn't enough and wanted a 10L one. Then they wanted a ventilator... Before joining the foundation, I was a donor myself, moved by the heartbreaking stories. I imagined how I'd treat these beneficiaries with kindness and patience. But after actually entering this field and doing the work, I had to admit that distance creates beauty. Up close, you realize we're all ordinary people with our human flaws – they have them, and I do too. Putting myself in their shoes, I began to understand their "fear."
Some Warmth from Donors
One day when I arrived at the office, I found a bag hanging on the door with a letter inside. The note said the person had followed our foundation for a long time. Passing by our office, they wanted to drop off a small gift as a token of appreciation. Another day stands out vividly. We were focused on our work when a silver-haired elderly gentleman walked into our office. He came with cash to donate. Curious, we asked how he knew about us and why he wanted to donate. He said he had been following our public account for a while and unconditionally trusted Teacher Yuan Li and believed our foundation was doing meaningful work. In the end, he refused to leave his name or contact information and walked out of our office.

Capturing Daily Office Life
Q1: Can you talk about Ms.Yuan Li as you see her?
A:Before meeting her in person, she was a star on screen. After interacting with her, I found Ms.Yuan Li has a free-spirited quality I associate with artists – her ideas change, she speaks her mind, and she treats vulnerable groups with genuine kindness. Even if she gets hurt sometimes, she doesn't seem to "learn her lesson"; next time, she'll likely do the same...I think Ms.Yuan Li would glare at me for saying this. When it comes to her areas of expertise, she's very serious and won't tolerate any sloppiness.
Q2: Who usually comes to visit the office?
A:People coming for medicine (beneficiaries), donors, kind-hearted folks wanting to visit the office, neighbors from the office park, and a regular tuxedo cat who comes by to check up on things...
Q3: What's the biggest difficulty you've encountered working at the foundation and your thoughts?
A:I've been with the foundation for a year and a half now. It's hard to point to one single biggest difficulty, but it's clear that oversight from higher authorities on the charity sector is getting stricter. Our foundation underwent several audits in the first half of this year, and there might be more in the second half. However, Teacher Yuan has always required us to operate at a 5A standard in every aspect. As they say, "To forge iron, you must be strong yourself." This way, we're not afraid of any inspection and live up to the trust of every kind-hearted supporter.
Honestly, I'm still a newbie in the charity world. Because of its unique position, working in this field requires a kind of belief to sustain you. Otherwise, the salary level is much lower than other industries, the workload isn't necessarily less, and there are uniquely high demands – you absolutely cannot make even the smallest financial mistake...but I still hope to stick with it in this field. Because here, moments of joy far outweigh those elsewhere.
