11/23 US Troops Withdraw from Mexico

When: 1963

Where: Veracruz, Mexico

Who:Ordered by President Woodrow Wilson

What:US Mexican relations had already been strained in the Spring of 1914 with the Mexican Revolution being fought among different factions and President Wilson refusing to recognize the de facto president of Mexico, Victoriano Huerta. In April, a brief altercation between US sailors purchasing fuel and Mexican Federal troops led to a brief imprisonment of the US servicemen, but quickly snowballed into Wilson asking for, and receiving Congressional approval to use military force to protect US interests in Mexico. The result was a US occupation of the Mexican port city of Veracruz.

Why significant:

US Mexican relations often had hot spots, but the time of the Mexican Revolution and its quickly changing governments as each faction briefly gained the upperhand for a brief period before being overthrown in turn was particularly tense: especially given American attitudes of mostly arrogant condescension if not blatant imperialism towards Mexico in general. The occupation of Veracruz lasted 6 months, even though Huerta was forced to resign as early as July. Two years later the US invaded northern Mexico in pursuit of another revolutionary leader, Poncho Villa.
