Why significant：The Soviet wanted to install Babrak Karmal as the new leader, while the U.S. backed the mujahideen groups.

The war brought an abrupt end to the era of détente between the U.S. and the Soviet Union that began during the Nixon years. In response to the Soviet intervention, President Jimmy Carter withdrew the SALT II agreement from consideration by Congress. The treaty, which had been signed in June 1979, was designed to establish parity in nuclear delivery vehicles between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. Carter also halted grain shipments to the Soviet Union and ordered a U.S. boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

The invasion turned out to be very costly for the Soviet Union, in terms of both death toll and monetary costs. Due to its length, it has sometimes been referred to as "the Soviet Union's Vietnam War," and is thought to be a contributing factor to the fall of the Soviet Union.
