Hello graduates.

毕业生们，你们好。

Every year I choose a different theme to address the graduating class at commencement.

每年我都会选择一个不同的主题在毕业典礼上致辞。

But while the topic varies, the last word of the speeches is typically the same.

但是，尽管主题不同，演讲的最后一个词通常是相同的。

"Congratulations".

那就是“祝贺”。

After all, every NYU class deserves to be recognized for their accomplishments and sent off into the world with our best wishes.

毕竟，纽约大学每一个班级的成就都应该被认可，并带着我们最好的祝福走入社会。

But now a spoiler alert.

Today's speech will also end with the word congratulations but its meaning to me is very different this year.

今天的演讲也将以“祝贺”这个词结束，但今年它对我的意义非常不同。

Class of 2021, one of the most consequential years of your lives, the year in which you complete your undergraduate or graduate degree.

2021届的同学们，这是你们人生中最重要的一年之一，是你们完成本科或研究生学业的一年。

That year coincided with one of the most consequential years in modern history.

这一年正好是现代历史上最重要的一年之一。

The past 12 months have seen the most serious public health emergency in a century.

过去12个月发生了一个世纪以来最严重的公共卫生紧急事件。

Also a reckoning of racial justice amid appalling continued acts of violence and also a polarizing U. S. presidential election coupled with threats to our institutions of democracy.

这也是在骇人听闻的持续暴力行为中对种族公正的反思，美国总统选举两极分化，我们的民主制度面临威胁。

Now, philosophers tell us that it's possible to find meaning in hardship.

哲学家告诉我们，在困难中找到意义是有可能的。

At the same time, a high schooler echoed the view of many of us this spring.

When she told the New York Times,"making history is way overrated". And they are both right.

Over the past year, some of you responded to the momentous events we faced by finding a new sense of purpose.

Some of you changed your career or your research plans.

你们中的一些人改变了职业或研究计划。

Some of you discovered new reserves of grit and some of you relied on the support of friends and family.

On some days it was a victory to change out of your pajamas.

在某些日子里，换掉睡衣就是一种胜利。

Some of you never changed out of your pajamas.

有些人从来没换过睡衣。

And that's okay too.

却也不在乎。

Many of you at some point felt grief, anxiety, outrage, or fear.

你们中的许多人在某个时候感到悲伤、焦虑、愤怒或恐惧。

But even though each of your experiences was unique there is one triumph that you all share.

即使你们每一个人的经历都是独一无二的，但你们取得的是共同的胜利。

You kept moving forward.

你们一直在前进。

You kept writing papers and evaluating lab data and composing music and completing case studies.

你们不停地写论文，评估实验室数据、作曲、完成案例研究。

You kept tapping that daily access screener and Zooming into classes sometimes across distant time zones.

你们每天不停地访问网站，有时跨越遥远的时区上网课。

You studied for finals and defended dissertations.

你们为期末考试和论文答辩而学习。

You each completed a demanding course of study.

你们每个人都完成了必修课程。

And today you are earning a degree from one of the premier universities in the world.

今天，你们将从一个世界上最好的大学获得学位。

There is something else that each one of you has earned over this past year.

在过去的一年里，你们每个人还收获了一些其他的东西。

The certain knowledge that you can do difficult things.

学到了可以迎难而上的特定知识。

And that will always be with you.

这将永远伴随着你。

When challenging circumstances arise in your life you will be able to draw on this year and say "I've got this,"I've done something extraordinary before".

当你的生活中出现挑战时，你可以利用这一年，说“我做到了，我以前做过一些不平凡的事情。”

So this year, Class of 2021,"congratulations" honors each of your experiences.

所以今年，2021届的毕业生们，让我用一句“恭喜”使你们每一个人的经历熠熠生辉。

It honors every hopeful, messy, enlightening, exhausting, inspired, maddening, transcendent moment that brought you to this point.

它尊重每一个充满希望的、混乱的、有启发的、疲惫的、受鼓舞的、卓越的时刻，并带你们来到了今天这一刻。

Today you are New York University graduates.

今天你们是纽约大学的毕业生。
