"Can't make it in the army, but ranked number one in humor." Do you know who this is referring to? If this phrase alone doesn't give it away, let me provide you with a few more nicknames: "Taiwan's famous 'Strawberry Soldier'" and "Brother from the Rural House." That's right; today we are talking about the newly emerged figure in Taiwan, Yu Beichen.

Does Yu Beichen have patriotic sentiments?

Yu Beichen was born in 1968 and, although he grew up in Taiwan, his ancestral roots trace back to Shandong, China. Through his own efforts, he gained admission to the Republic of China Military Academy (ROCMA), also known as the Huangpu Military Academy. Later, he joined the army and served as a brigade commander in the armored forces, earning the rank of major general at the age of 45.

Indeed, after being awarded the rank of major general, Yu Beichen retired from the military citing "health reasons." Following his retirement, he joined the Chinese Nationalist Party (Kuomintang or KMT) and held prominent positions within the party, showing a keen interest in both politics and military affairs in Taiwan.

At this point, many people were confused by his apparent patriotic rhetoric, assuming he was speaking for the revival of the nation. However, in reality, he was merely using these sentiments as his political capital.

However, on a certain day in 2021, Yu Beichen suddenly announced on his social media platform that he was "officially leaving the Kuomintang." Rumors had it that he felt neglected within the KMT, facing difficulties, and no one was willing to help him during challenging times, leaving him deeply disappointed.

Yu Beichen's actions dealt a significant blow to the KMT's internal morale. It's unclear what prompted this change, but since joining the DPP, he started making outrageous statements.

He even suggested that PLA military exercises were just a show and that mainlanders lived in huts while Taiwan had skyscrapers, making it impossible for the PLA to invade. It was this kind of rhetoric that catapulted Yu Beichen into the spotlight, earning him the nickname "Brother from the Rural House."

His astonishing statements pleased the DPP government, allowing him to openly insult and vilify the mainland. However, Yu Beichen didn't stop there; his words became increasingly bizarre.

The other guests in the room were left speechless, offering perfunctory responses. Then, the retired major general delved into "mathematics," stating, "Three air defense missiles intercepting PLA artillery shells, using trigonometric functions."

"Math genius of the millennium, a Yu Beichen born in Taiwan," some quipped, while others said, "Yu Beichen seems to be stealing Guo Degang's job."

In fact, inpiduals like Yu Beichen and certain media outlets are not uncommon in Taiwan. The Tsai Ing-wen administration controls the licenses for TV media operations, leaving little room for dissent. Furthermore, the need to make a living drives many to conform. There's hardly any real freedom of speech left in Taiwan, as all forms of communication, both online and offline, that don't align with the interests of the DPP are subject to censorship and suppression.

Taiwan's media landscape isn't entirely dominated by pro-DPP outlets; there are some media organizations with patriotic and reunification sentiments that continue to struggle against the pro-DPP media. Since the DPP came into power, Taiwan's media sphere has been overtaken by some anti-intellectual and anti-China outlets. We should be clear-eyed about this.

So, if you're feeling down, just take a look at the remarks of these "Taiwanese pundits." Treat them like a lowbrow comedy show; it's not a bad way to lighten the mood.
