It all depends on which value you ascribe to this country.

India traditionally relies on collectivism as opposed to Western inpidualism. While free speech and liberty are cornerstone of western political thought, public morality and social responsibility are integral to Indian cultural ethos. This is the context against which Madras High Court judgement has to be seen.

To put things in perspective, TikTok is an online intermediary that provides a platform for users to create and share short videos. On one hand, people have become famous by uploading their videos, they have become instant celebrities but on the other hand people have died and their personal private videos have become public on YouTube and other media violating their privacy. Now it has got two angles.

The decision violates freedom of speech and expression under article 19 of constitution. It is inherent freedom of an inpidual to choose his medium of expression and express his will. Whatever I am posting I am responsible why to ban the app?

The freedom of speech and expression is not absolute. It is well within the reasonable restrictions under article 19(2) of the constitution. Public morality and social order takes precedence over inpidual right.

I would like to quote observation of the Madras High Court in this regard:

the app promotes “degrading culture and encourages pornography besides causing pedophiles and explicit disturbing content, social stigma and medical health issues between teens.” The bench goes on to assert that “nobody can be pranked or shocked or being made a subject of mockery by any third party and it would amount to violation of privacy”. The court further affirmed that addictive apps like TikTok spoil the future and the minds of youngsters.

So in order to uphold public morality, the ban is essential. But to what extent inpidual choice is hurt that is debatable.

The Chinese app Tiktok is the most useless app in my opinion. I never downloaded and used it.But I don't support the Tiktok ban.

Google and Apple have taken the drastic step of removing the Tiktok app from the Indian stores on the direction of Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. Indian govt took this step when Supreme Court refused to stay an earlier order by the Madras High Court that asked the Indian government to ban the Tiktok app for spreading inappropriate content (such as porn).

Can this ban stop the Tiktok supporters from downloading it? No. It can't. Still people are downloading Tiktok from other websites. So this ban is “pointless” and ineffective.

Next question is what about other apps which are similar to Tiktok? Aren't they spreading porn or misleading content to children? Why they aren't banned still?

My point is the ban is not the complete solution to any problem. Creating awareness among peoples and regulating its usage is the complete solution.

While not a case of a firearm accidentally being set off, one college student from Tamil Nadu lost his life after accidentally ramming into a bus while riding on a scooter with two of his friends. The accident as it turns out was a consequence of the three trying to make a TikTok video while riding on a scooter.

Moving back to northern India, earlier this year a man in Punjab lost his life after he came under a tractor while making a Tik Tok video.

As per reports, the man was making a video on the platform during which he attempted to get on a moving tractor. Another reported incident of Tik Tok video going wrong is from last year when in Chennai a man trying to make a video accidentally slit his throat on camera.

According to reports, the man was shooting a video where he was pretending to slit his throat. However, as he was making the video, he accidentally ended up slitting his throat for real and was then captured on the video trying to stop himself from bleeding to death even as he attempted to end the recording. His attempts were in vain as he ultimately ended up losing his life to the mishap during the filming of the fateful Tik Tok video.

First of all I never downloaded TikTok. But many people downloaded it, made videos from their skills and many people find it entertaining. App was a total crash and ban was a Good Decision.

One of my friend's friend has been on Tik -Tok from the very beginning. My friend used to complain that he is so much obsessed with making videos that he keeps his mind occupied worrying about new ideas for the videos. He had started skipping the college which were affecting his on-going placements. But then he was least bothered about it.

At the end of placement session he was unemployed. He then joined a small company with meagre salary. Even after so much he could not be away from his tiktok thing. At the just start of his career he was doing avoidable blunders. He was getting screwed at his work regularly. But nothing could shake his determination in making Tik Tok videos.
